Because travel to colleges and universities for special events creates a high demand for accommodations, this does sometimes happen, for reasons explained here. In most cases the hotel will try to provide a reasonable alternative, but options may be limited. The type of response you receive is at the discretion of the hotel and there is no guarantee.
